Oct 4th, 2007
We had our first chance to check out the new Amsoil Sandbox Arena. There had been talk about the facility in the
spring of 2007 already and if you were like most of us, you checked out www.sandboxarena.com several times
through the year to watch the progress. October 1st, 2007 was scheduled to be their grand opening and they
managed to pull it off. Myself and Roger Brown headed over to the facility this past Thursday, October 4th to see
what the facility had to offer first hand. We arrived around 10:30 am and were anxious to get the quads on the track.
However, we first headed into the registration area to get our VIP passes and a quick low down on the facility from
Dawn.
We then proceeded to walk the track. The track layout has a tight short right hand corner from the start. The starting
gates weren't in yet but it looks like they will be able to handle 15 bikes and 7 quads on the line. After the start, you
come around a corner with an immediate single jump followed by a rhythm section. After the first rhythm section is a
high banked corner (all the corners are like this), leading into a double-double section. You then come into another
corner followed by a sort of step-up, step down, single to a corner. This was probably the hardest section to try and
figure out. After the third corner is a triple. There were several bikes that were doing the triple, but no quads have
yet. I'm sure we'll see someone doing it soon though. After the corner from the triple is a short table top followed by
a odd double-double. The first part of this section was hard to get down as well. You then banked another corner
followed by a step down the landed you into a dished out bowled corner that seemed to drop you down 10 feet
below the rest of the track. You then had to climb up a monstrous single. From there you swing around the outside
of the track and through another rhythm section. Then you do it all over again.
This track keeps you on your tows the entire time with no place to relax. As soon as you complete one obstacle, you
are into another one. Corey Burton and Raj Walia were also there checking out the facility. We then proceeded to
get some seat time in and rode off and on for about 4 hours.
After riding we took the time to meet with owner Rob Murphy and Amsoil Race Program Manager Jeremy Meyer.
Both guys seemed very excited to have the facility open and were anxious for the racing to begin. Rob Murphy is a
bike guy himself but he definitely looking for the quads to make a good showing for the winter series which kicks
off October 27th. We hung for a while longer in the lobby area where they had food, sitting area, view of the track,
and some classic MX dvds playing on the TV's. Weather you are a spectator or a racer, this is definitely a place you
need to check out.
